I’ve had many discussions on this topic and industry leaders would say it’s a must whereas productions and OT leaders may say ‘hmmm, virtualizing trusted factory control equipment?!…hold the horses, don’t touch a running system.’
But as we’ve seen at Hannover Messe earlier this year and throughout other events and public announcements, the industry is moving on and forward with OEMs and industry slowly progressing in the same, software-defined direction.

For all of those who are German speakers or have a good command of German, I recommend listening to the podcast with Dr. Gunther May from Bosch Rexroth. Not only do I admire his expertise, technical insight and vision, but also believe that his explanations and comments on ‘Bringing the Control Layer into the Server Room’ or a central server estate of some sort is excellent and worth listening to as well as reviewing internally with OT teams.
